           ThomasleanedagainstthetreeashewaitedforChuck.HescannedthecompoundoftheGlade,thisnewplaceofnightmareswhereheseemeddestinedtolive.Theshadowsfromthewallshadlengthenedconsiderably,alreadycreepingupthesidesoftheivy-coveredstonefacesontheotherside.

           AtleastthishelpedThomasknowdirectionsthewoodenbuildingcrouchedinthenorthwestcorner,wedgedinadarkeningpatchofshadow,thegroveoftreesinthesouthwest.Thefarmarea,whereafewworkerswerestillpickingtheirwaythroughthefields,spreadacrosstheentirenortheastquarteroftheGlade.Theanimalswereinthesoutheastcorner,mooingandcrowingandbaying.

           Intheexactmiddleofthecourtyard,thestill-gapingholeoftheBoxlayopen,asifinvitinghimtojumpbackinandgohome.Nearthat,maybetwentyfeettothesouth,stoodasquatbuildingmadeofroughconcreteblocks,amenacingirondooritsonlyentrancetherewerenowindows.Alargeroundhandleresemblingasteelsteeringwheelmarkedtheonlywaytoopenthedoor,justlikesomethingwithinasubmarine.Despitewhathe’djustseen,Thomasdidn’tknowwhichhefeltmorestronglycuriositytoknowwhatwasinside,ordreadatfindingout.

           ThomashadjustmovedhisattentiontothefourvastopeningsinthemiddleofthemainwallsoftheGladewhenChuckarrived,acoupleofsandwichescradledinhisarms,alongwithapplesandtwometalcupsofwater.ThesenseofreliefthatfloodedthroughThomassurprisedhimhewasn’tcompletelyaloneinthisplace.
