           "Frypanwasn’ttoohappyaboutmeinvadinghiskitchenbeforesuppertime,"Chucksaid,sittingdownnexttothetree,motioningtoThomastodothesame.Hedid,grabbedthesandwich,buthesitated,thewrithing,monstrousimageofwhathe’dseenintheshackpoppingbackintohismind.Soon,though,hishungerwonoutandhetookahugebite.Thewonderfultastesofhamandcheeseandmayonnaisefilledhismouth.

           "Ah,man,"Thomasmumbledthroughamouthful."Iwasstarving."

           "Toldya."Chuckchompedintohisownsandwich.

           Afteranothercoupleofbites,Thomasfinallyaskedthequestionthathadbeenbotheringhim."What’sactuallywrongwiththatBenguy?Hedoesn’tevenlookhumananymore."

           Chuckglancedoveratthehouse."Don’treallyknow,"hemutteredabsently."Ididn’tseehim."

           Thomascouldtelltheboywasbeinglessthanhonestbutdecidednottopresshim."Well,youdon’twanttoseehim,trustme."Hecontinuedtoeat,munchingontheapplesashestudiedthehugebreaksinthewalls.Thoughitwashardtomakeoutfromwherehesat,therewassomethingoddaboutthestoneedgesoftheexitstotheoutsidecorridors.Hefeltanuncomfortablesenseofvertigolookingatthetoweringwalls,asifhehoveredabovetheminsteadofsittingattheirbase.

           "What’soutthere?"heasked,finallybreakingthesilence."Isthispartofahugecastleorsomething?"

           Chuckhesitated.Lookeduncomfortable."Um,I’veneverbeenoutsidetheGlade."

           Thomaspaused.
