Itdrovealonginastraightline,incapableofguidance.ItstruckthetowerofSheppertonChurch,smashingitdownastheimpactofabatteringrammighthavedone,swervedaside,blunderedonandcollapsedwithtremendousforceintotheriveroutofmysight.
Aviolentexplosionshooktheair,andaspoutofwater,steam,mud,andshatteredmetalshotfarupintothesky. AsthecameraoftheHeat-Rayhitthewater,thelatterhadimmediatelyflashedintosteam. Inanothermomentahugewave,likeamuddytidalborebutalmostscaldinglyhot,camesweepingroundthebendupstream. Isawpeoplestrugglingshorewards,andheardtheirscreamingandshoutingfaintlyabovetheseethingandroaroftheMartian’scollapse.
ForamomentIheedednothingoftheheat,forgotthepatentneedofself-preservation.Isplashedthroughthetumultuouswater,pushingasideamaninblacktodoso,untilIcouldseeroundthebend. Halfadozendesertedboatspitchedaimlesslyupontheconfusionofthewaves. ThefallenMartiancameintosightdownstream,lyingacrosstheriver,andforthemostpartsubmerged.
Thickcloudsofsteamwerepouringoffthewreckage,andthroughthetumultuouslywhirlingwispsIcouldsee,intermittentlyandvaguely,thegiganticlimbschurningthewaterandflingingasplashandsprayofmudandfrothintotheair. Thetentaclesswayedandstrucklikelivingarms,and,saveforthehelplesspurposelessnessofthesemovements,itwasasifsomewoundedthingwerestrugglingforitslifeamidthewaves.
