ThentheThingshutofftheHeat-Ray,andturningitsbackupontheartilleryman,begantowaddleawaytowardsthesmoulderingpinewoodsthatshelteredthesecondcylinder. AsitdidsoasecondglitteringTitanbuiltitselfupoutofthepit.
Thesecondmonsterfollowedthefirst,andatthattheartillerymanbegantocrawlverycautiouslyacrossthehotheatherashtowardsHorsell. Hemanagedtogetaliveintotheditchbythesideoftheroad,andsoescapedtoWoking. Therehisstorybecameejaculatory. Theplacewasimpassable. Itseemstherewereafewpeoplealivethere,franticforthemostpartandmanyburnedandscalded. Hewasturnedasidebythefire,andhidamongsomealmostscorchingheapsofbrokenwallasoneoftheMartiangiantsreturned. Hesawthisonepursueaman,catchhimupinoneofitssteelytentacles,andknockhisheadagainstthetrunkofapinetree. Atlast,afternightfall,theartillerymanmadearushforitandgotovertherailwayembankment.
SincethenhehadbeenskulkingalongtowardsMaybury,inthehopeofgettingoutofdangerLondonward. Peoplewerehidingintrenchesandcellars,andmanyofthesurvivorshadmadeofftowardsWokingvillageandSend. Hehadbeenconsumedwiththirstuntilhefoundoneofthewatermainsneartherailwayarchsmashed,andthewaterbubblingoutlikeaspringupontheroad.
