Onewouldhaveatleastexpecteditinlocomotion. AndinthisconnectionitiscurioustoremarkthatevenonthisearthNaturehasneverhituponthewheel,orhaspreferredotherexpedientstoitsdevelopment. AndnotonlydidtheMartianseithernotknowof(whichisincredible),orabstainfrom,thewheel,butintheirapparatussingularlylittleuseismadeofthefixedpivotorrelativelyfixedpivot,withcircularmotionsthereaboutconfinedtooneplane. ItseemedinfinitelymorealivethantheactualMartianslyingbeyonditinthesunsetlight,panting,stirringineffectualtentacles,andmovingfeeblyaftertheirvastjourneyacrossspace.
WhileIwasstillwatchingtheirsluggishmotionsinthesunlight,andnotingeachstrangedetailoftheirform,thecurateremindedmeofhispresencebypullingviolentlyatmyarm.
