HekepttheWendtidlinguntilShadowwassafelyupthewoodenstepsonthesideofthehouse,andhadopenedtheapartmentdoorwithhiskey.Thedoortotheapartmentswungopen.Shadowmadeathumbs-upsignandtheoldmanintheWendt—Tessie,thoughtShadow,andthethoughtofacarwithanamemadehimsmileonemoretime—HinzelmannandTessieswungaroundandmadetheirwaybackacrossthebridge.

Therewasasmallbedroomwithabaremattressinit,besidethekitchen,nexttoaneventinierbathroomthatwasmostlyshowerstall.Anagedcigarettebuttfloatedinthetoiletbowl,stainingthewaterbrown.Shadowflusheditaway.
Hefoundsheetsandblanketsinacloset,andmadethebed.
