Shadowwentoutbackandgotthehearse.Mr.JacquelandMr.Ibishadeachmadeapoint,individually,ofexplainingthat,really,thehearseshouldonlybeusedforfunerals,andtheyhadavanthattheyusedtocollectbodies,butthevanwasbeingrepaired,hadbeenforthreeweeksnow,andcouldhebeverycarefulwiththehearse?Shadowdrovecarefullydownthestreet.Thesnowplowshadcleanedtheroadsbynow,buthewascomfortabledrivingslowly.Itseemedrighttogoslowinahearse,althoughhecouldbarelyrememberthelasttimehehadseenahearseonthestreets.DeathhadvanishedfromthestreetsofAmerica,thoughtShadow;nowithappenedinhospitalroomsandinambulances.Wemustnotstartletheliving,thoughtShadow.Mr.Ibishadtoldhimthattheymovethedeadaboutinsomehospitalsonthelowerlevelofapparentlyemptycoveredgurneys,thedeceasedtravelingtheirownpathsintheirowncoveredways.
Adarkbluepolicecruiserwasparkedonasidestreet,andShadowpulledupthehearsebehindit.Thereweretwocopsinsidethecruiser,drinkingtheircoffeefromthermostops.Theyhadtheenginerunningtokeepwarm.Shadowtappedonthesidewindow.
"Yeah?"
"I’mfromthefuneralhome,"saidShadow.
"We’rewaitingforthemedicalexaminer,"saidthecop.Shadowwonderedifitwasthesamemanwhohadspokentohimunderthebridge.
