Hisbedroom,likethekitchen,seemedtohavebeendecoratedsometimeinthe1920s:therewasawashstandandapitcherbesidethechestofdrawersandmirror.Theroomitselfsmelledfaintlymusty,asifitwastooinfrequentlyaired,andthesheetsofthebedseemedfaintlydampwhenhetouchedthem.
Someonehadalreadylaidoutclothesforhimonthebed:ablacksuit,whiteshirt,blacktie,whiteundershirtandunderpants,blacksocks.BlackshoessatonthewornPersiancarpetbesidethebed.
Hedressedhimself.Theclotheswereofgoodquality,althoughnoneofthemwerenew.Hewonderedwhotheyhadbelongedto.Washewearingadeadman’ssocks?Wouldhebesteppingintoadeadman’sshoes?Thenheputtheclothesonandlookedathimselfinthemirror.Theclothesfitperfectly:therewasnoteventhestretchingaroundthechestortheshortnessinthearmshehadexpected.Headjustedthetieinthemirrorandnowitseemedtohimthathisreflectionwassmilingathim,sardonically.Hescratchedthesideofhisnose,wasactuallyrelievedwhenhisreflectiondidthesame.
Nowitseemedinconceivabletohimthathehadeverthoughtofcuttinghisthroat.Hisreflectioncontinuedtosmileasheadjustedhistie.
"Hey,"hesaidtoit,"youknowsomethingthatIdon’t?"andimmediatelyfeltfoolish.
Thedoorcreakedopenandthecatslippedbetweenthedoorpostandthedoorandpaddedacrosstheroom,thenuponthewindowsill.
