"Okay,"saidShadow."Well,watchthis."Shadowpulledoutaquarterwithhislefthand,helditup,tiltingitfromonesidetoanother,thenappearedtotossitintohisrighthand,closinghishandhardonnothing,andputtingthehandforward."Now,"hesaid,"Ijusttakesomeinvisiblepowderfrommypocket"—andhereachedhislefthandintohisbreastpocket,droppingthequarterintothepocketashedidso—"andIsprinkleitonthehandwiththecoin"—andhemimedsprinkling,—"andlook—nowthequarter’sinvisibletoo."Heopenedhisemptyrighthand,and,inastonishment,hisemptylefthandaswell.

Theblackdogandthelittlebrowncatwerewatchinghimaswell,flankingthegirl,lookingupathimintently.Thedog’shugeearswereprickedup,givingitacomicallyalertexpression.Acrane-likemanwithgold-rimmedspectacleswascomingupthesidewalktowardthem,peeringfromsidetosideasifhewerelookingforsomething.Shadowwonderedifhewasthedog’sowner.
