Lightningburstinblindingflashesaroundtheplane.Thecaptaincameontheintercomtotellthemthathewasgoingtotryandgainsomealtitude,togetawayfromthestorm.
Theplaneshookandshuddered,andShadowwondered,coldlyandidly,ifhewasgoingtodie.Itseemedpossible,hedecided,butunlikely.Hestaredoutofthewindowandwatchedthelightningilluminatethehorizon.
Thenhedozedoncemore,anddreamedhewasbackinprisonandthatLowKeyhadwhisperedtohiminthefoodlinethatsomeonehadputoutacontractonhislife,butthatShadowcouldnotfindoutwhoorwhy;andwhenhewokeuptheywerecominginforalanding.
Hestumbledofftheplane,blinkingintowakefulness.
Allairports,hethought,lookverymuchthesame.Itdoesn’tactuallymatterwhereyouare,youareinanairport:tilesandwalkwaysandrestrooms,gatesandnewsstandsandfluorescentlights.Thisairportlookedlikeanairport.Thetroubleis,thiswasn’ttheairporthewasgoingto.Thiswasabigairport,withwaytoomanypeople,andwaytoomanygates.
