           ThewidowRichardsonmissedhersons,andshemissedherhusband,althoughhewasnowlittlemorethanamemoryofafairmanwhotreatedherkindly.Phyllida’schildrenwouldcometoEssiefortales,andshewouldtellthemoftheBlackDogoftheMoors,andofRaw-HeadandBloody-Bones,ortheAppleTreeMan,buttheywerenotinterested;theyonlywantedtalesofJack-JackuptheBeanstalk,orJackGiant-killer,orJackandhisCatandtheKing.Shelovedthosechildrenasiftheywereherownfleshandblood,althoughsometimesshewouldcallthembythenamesofthoselongdead.

           ItwasMay,andshetookherchairoutintothekitchengardentopickpeasandtoshucktheminthesunlight,foreveninthelushheatofVirginiathecoldhadenteredherbonesasthefrosthadenteredherhair,andalittlewarmthwasafinething.
