           IWANTEDtogoandlookataplacerightaboutthemiddleoftheislandthatI’dfoundwhenIwasexploring;sowestartedandsoongottoit,becausetheislandwasonlythreemileslongandaquarterofamilewide.

           Thisplacewasatolerablelong,steephillorridgeaboutfortyfoothigh.Wehadaroughtimegettingtothetop,thesideswassosteepandthebushessothick.Wetrampedandclumbaroundalloverit,andbyandbyfoundagoodbigcavernintherock,mostuptothetoponthesidetowardsIllinois.Thecavernwasasbigastwoorthreeroomsbunchedtogether,andJimcouldstandupstraightinit.Itwascoolinthere.Jimwasforputtingourtrapsinthererightaway,butIsaidwedidn’twanttobeclimbingupanddownthereallthetime.

           Jimsaidifwehadthecanoehidinagoodplace,andhadallthetrapsinthecavern,wecouldrushthereifanybodywastocometotheisland,andtheywouldneverfinduswithoutdogs.And,besides,hesaidthemlittlebirdshadsaiditwasgoingtorain,anddidIwantthethingstogetwet?

           Sowewentbackandgotthecanoe,andpaddledupabreastthecavern,andluggedallthetrapsupthere.Thenwehuntedupaplaceclosebytohidethecanoein,amongstthethickwillows.Wetooksomefishoffofthelinesandsetthemagain,andbeguntogetreadyfordinner.

           Thedoorofthecavernwasbigenoughtorollahogsheadin,andononesideofthedoorthefloorstuckoutalittlebit,andwasflatandagoodplacetobuildafireon.
