           THEsunwasupsohighwhenIwakedthatIjudgeditwasaftereighto’clock.Ilaidthereinthegrassandthecoolshadethinkingaboutthings,andfeelingrestedandruthercomfortableandsatisfied.Icouldseethesunoutatoneortwoholes,butmostlyitwasbigtreesallabout,andgloomyinthereamongstthem.Therewasfreckledplacesonthegroundwherethelightsifteddownthroughtheleaves,andthefreckledplacesswappedaboutalittle,showingtherewasalittlebreezeupthere.Acoupleofsquirrelssetonalimbandjabberedatmeveryfriendly.

           Iwaspowerfullazyandcomfortabledidn’twanttogetupandcookbreakfast.Well,IwasdozingoffagainwhenIthinksIhearsadeepsoundof"boom!"awayuptheriver.Irousesup,andrestsonmyelbowandlistens;prettysoonIhearsitagain.Ihoppedup,andwentandlookedoutataholeintheleaves,andIseeabunchofsmokelayingonthewateralongwaysupaboutabreasttheferry.Andtherewastheferryboatfullofpeoplefloatingalongdown.Iknowedwhatwasthematternow."Boom!"Iseethewhitesmokesquirtoutoftheferryboat’sside.Yousee,theywasfiringcannonoverthewater,tryingtomakemycarcasscometothetop.

           Iwasprettyhungry,butitwarn’tgoingtodoformetostartafire,becausetheymightseethesmoke.SoIsetthereandwatchedthecannon-smokeandlistenedtotheboom.
