           Then,quitedistinctly,heheardacrashinthekitchenbelow.

           Hesatboltupright,listeningintently.TheDursleyscouldn’tbeback,itwasmuchtoosoon,andinanycasehehadn’theardtheircar.

           Therewassilenceforafewseconds,thenvoices.

           Burglars,hethought,slidingoffthebedontohisfeetbutasplitsecondlateritoccurredtohimthatburglarswouldkeeptheirvoicesdown,andwhoeverwasmovingaroundinthekitchenwascertainlynottroublingtodoso.

           Hesnatcheduphiswandfromthebedsidetableandstoodfacinghisbedroomdoor,listeningwithallhismight.Nextmoment,hejumpedasthelockgavealoudclickandhisdoorswungopen.

           Harrystoodmotionless,staringthroughtheopendoorwayatthedarkupstairslanding,straininghisearsforfurthersounds,butnonecame.Hehesitatedforamoment,thenmovedswiftlyandsilentlyoutofhisroomtotheheadofthestairs.
