Iimmediatelyconsideredthatthismustbesomeshipindistress,andthattheyhadsomecomrade,orsomeothershipincompany,andfiredthesegunforsignalsofdistress,andtoobtainhelp. Ihadthispresenceofmind,atthatminute,astothinkthatthoughIcouldnothelpthem,itmightbethattheymighthelpme; soIbroughttogetherallthedrywoodIcouldgetathand,and,makingagoodhandsomepile,Isetitonfireuponthehill. Thewoodwasdry,andblazedfreely;andthoughthewindblewveryhard,yetitburntfairlyout;sothatIwascertain,iftherewasanysuchthingasaship,theymustneedsseeit,andnodoubttheydid; forassoonasevermyfireblazedupIheardanothergun,andafterthatseveralothers,allfromthesamequarter. Ipliedmyfireallnightlongtilldaybroke;andwhenitwasbroadday,andtheairclearedup,Isawsomethingatagreatdistanceatsea,fulleastoftheisland,whetherasailorahullIcouldnotdistinguish,no,notwithmyglasses,thedistancewassogreat,andtheweatherstillsomethinghazyalso;atleastitwassooutatsea.
