WhenfirstIdiscoveredthem,Iwasgoingtogiveovermyenterprise,andcomebackagain,notknowinghowfaritmightobligemetogoouttosea,and,aboveall,doubtinghowIshouldgetbackagain,soIcametoananchor; forIhadmademeakindofananchorwithapieceofbrokengrapplingwhichIgotoutoftheship.
Havingsecuredmyboat,Itookmygunandwentonshore,climbingupuponahill,whichseemedtooverlookthatpoint,whereIsawthefullextentofit,andresolvedtoventure.
Inmyviewingtheseafromthathill,whereIstood,Iperceivedastrong,andindeedamostfuriouscurrent,whichruntotheeast,andevencameclosetothepoint; andItookthemorenoticeofbecauseIsawtheremightbesomedangerthatwhenIcameintoitImightbecarriedouttoseabythestrengthofit,andnotbeabletomaketheislandagain. Andindeed,hadInotgottenfirstupuponthishill,Ibelieveitwouldhavebeenso;fortherewasthesamecurrentontheothersideoftheisland,onlythatitsetoffatafartherdistance;andIsawtherewasastrongeddyundertheshore; soIhadnothingtodobuttogetinoutofthefirstcurrent,andIshouldpresentlybeinaneddy.
Ilayhere,however,twodays; becausethewind,blowingprettyfreshatESE.,andthatbeingjustcontrarytothesaidcurrent,madeagreatbreachoftheseauponthepoint; sothatitwasnotsafeformetokeeptooclosetotheshoreforthebreach,nortogotoofaroffbecauseofthestream.
