           I,thatwasreducedtoamerestateofnature,foundthistomydailydiscouragement,andwasmademoreandmoresensibleofiteveryhour, evenafterIhadgotthefirsthandfulofseedcorn,which,asIhavesaid,cameupunexpectedly,andindeed,toasurprise. 

           First,Ihadnoploughtoturnuptheearth,nospadeorshoveltodigit. Well,thisIconqueredbymakingawoodenspade,asIobservedbefore,butthisdidmyworkinbutawoodenmanner; andthoughitcostmeagreatmanydaystomakeit,yet,forwantofiron,itnotonlyworeoutthesooner,butmademyworktheharder,andmadeitbeperformedmuchworse. 

           However,thisIborewith,andwascontenttoworkitoutwithpatience,andbearwiththebadnessoftheperformance. Whenthecornwassowed,Ihadnoharrow,butwasforcedtogooveritmyself,anddragagreatheavyboughofatreeoverit,toscratchit,asitmaybecalled,ratherthanrakeorharrowit. 

           Whenitwasgrowingandgrown,IhaveobservedalreadyhowmanythingsIwantedtofenceit,secureit,moworreapit,cureandcarryithome,thrash,partitfromthechaff,andsaveit.
