           Itwastheoldcrowdinwhichhefoundhimselftheoldcrowd,withhereandthereagap,andhereandthereanewface. Thefellowswerenotbricklayers,but,asintheolddays,theyattendedallSundaypicnicsforthedancing,andthefighting,andthefun. Martindrankwiththem,andbegantofeelreallyhumanoncemore. Hewasafooltohaveeverleftthem,hethought; andhewasverycertainthathissumofhappinesswouldhavebeengreaterhadheremainedwiththemandletalonethebooksandthepeoplewhosatinthehighplaces. Yetthebeerseemednotsogoodasofyore. Itdidn’ttasteasitusedtotaste. Brissendenhadspoiledhimforsteambeer,heconcluded,andwonderedif,afterall,thebookshadspoiledhimforcompanionshipwiththesefriendsofhisyouth. Heresolvedthathewouldnotbesospoiled,andhewentontothedancingpavilion. Jimmy,theplumber,hemetthere,inthecompanyofatall,blondgirlwhopromptlyforsookhimforMartin. 

           "Gee,it’slikeoldtimes,"JimmyexplainedtothegangthatgavehimthelaughasMartinandtheblondewhirledawayinawaltz. "An’Idon’tgivearap. I’mtoodamnedgladtosee’mback. Watch’mwaltz,eh? It’slikesilk. Who’dblameanygirl?"
