           Martinwentbacktohispearl-divingarticle,whichwouldhavebeenfinishedsoonerifithadnotbeenbrokeninuponsofrequentlybyhisattemptstowritepoetry. Hispoemswerelovepoems,inspiredbyRuth,buttheywerenevercompleted. Notinadaycouldhelearntochantinnobleverse. Rhymeandmetreandstructurewereseriousenoughinthemselves,buttherewas,overandbeyondthem,anintangibleandevasivesomethingthathecaughtinallgreatpoetry,butwhichhecouldnotcatchandimprisoninhisown. Itwastheelusivespiritofpoetryitselfthathesensedandsoughtafterbutcouldnotcapture. Itseemedaglowtohim,awarmandtrailingvapor,everbeyondhisreaching,thoughsometimeshewasrewardedbycatchingatshredsofitandweavingthemintophrasesthatechoedinhisbrainwithhauntingnotesordriftedacrosshisvisioninmistywaftureofunseenbeauty. Itwasbaffling. Heachedwithdesiretoexpressandcouldbutgibberprosaicallyaseverybodygibbered. Hereadhisfragmentsaloud. Themetremarchedalongonperfectfeet,andtherhymepoundedalongerandequallyfaultlessrhythm,buttheglowandhighexaltationthathefeltwithinwerelacking. Hecouldnotunderstand,andtimeandagain,indespair,defeatedanddepressed,hereturnedtohisarticle. Prosewascertainlyaneasiermedium.
