           Hehadnotfinishedthesentence,butlookedaboutthemeanlittleroomandlethiseyesdwellsadlyuponaheapofreturnedmanuscripts,stillintheirlongenvelopes,whichlayinacorneronthefloor. Hehadnostampswithwhichtocontinuethemontheirtravels,andforaweektheyhadbeenpilingup. Moreofthemwouldcomeinonthemorrow,andonthenextday,andthenext,tilltheywereallin. Andhewouldbeunabletostartthemoutagain. Hewasamonth’srentbehindonthetypewriter,whichhecouldnotpay,havingbarelyenoughfortheweek’sboardwhichwasdueandfortheemploymentofficefees. 

           Hesatdownandregardedthetablethoughtfully. Therewereinkstainsuponit,andhesuddenlydiscoveredthathewasfondofit.
