           Backitcame,withtheeditor’sregrets,andMartinsentittoSanFranciscoagain,thistimetoTheHornet,apretentiousmonthlythathadbeenfannedintoaconstellationofthefirstmagnitudebythebrilliantjournalistwhofoundedit. ButTheHornet’slighthadbeguntodimlongbeforeMartinwasborn. TheeditorpromisedMartinfifteendollarsforthepoem,but,whenitwaspublished,seemedtoforgetaboutit. Severalofhislettersbeingignored,Martinindictedanangryonewhichdrewareply. Itwaswrittenbyaneweditor,whocoollyinformedMartinthathedeclinedtobeheldresponsiblefortheoldeditor’smistakes,andthathedidnotthinkmuchof"ThePeriandthePearl"anyway. 

           ButTheGlobe,aChicagomagazine,gaveMartinthemostcrueltreatmentofall. Hehadrefrainedfromofferinghis"SeaLyrics"forpublication,untildriventoitbystarvation. Afterhavingbeenrejectedbyadozenmagazines,theyhadcometorestinTheGlobeoffice. Therewerethirtypoemsinthecollection,andhewastoreceiveadollarapieceforthem. Thefirstmonthfourwerepublished,andhepromptlyreceivedacheekforfourdollars; butwhenhelookedoverthemagazine,hewasappalledattheslaughter. Insomecasesthetitleshadbeenaltered:"Finis,"forinstance,beingchangedto"TheFinish,"and"TheSongoftheOuterReef"to"TheSongoftheCoralReef." Inonecase,anabsolutelydifferenttitle,amisappropriatetitle,wassubstituted.
