           AnothersourceofincometoMariawerehercows,twoofthem,whichshemilkednightandmorningandwhichgainedasurreptitiouslivelihoodfromvacantlotsandthegrassthatgrewoneithersidethepublicsidewalks,attendedalwaysbyoneormoreofherraggedboys,whosewatchfulguardianshipconsistedchieflyinkeepingtheireyesoutforthepoundmen. 

           InhisownsmallroomMartinlived,slept,studied,wrote,andkepthouse. Beforetheonewindow,lookingoutonthetinyfrontporch,wasthekitchentablethatservedasdesk,library,andtype-writingstand. Thebed,againsttherearwall,occupiedtwo-thirdsofthetotalspaceoftheroom. Thetablewasflankedononesidebyagaudybureau,manufacturedforprofitandnotforservice,thethinveneerofwhichwassheddaybyday. Thisbureaustoodinthecorner,andintheoppositecorner,onthetable’sotherflank,wasthekitchentheoil-stoveonadry-goodsbox,insideofwhichweredishesandcookingutensils,ashelfonthewallforprovisions,andabucketofwateronthefloor. Martinhadtocarryhiswaterfromthekitchensink,therebeingnotapinhisroom. Ondayswhentherewasmuchsteamtohiscooking,theharvestofveneerfromthebureauwasunusuallygenerous. Overthebed,hoistedbyatackletotheceiling,washisbicycle. Atfirsthehadtriedtokeepitinthebasement; butthetribeofSilva,looseningthebearingsandpuncturingthetires,haddrivenhimout. Nextheattemptedthetinyfrontporch,untilahowlingsoutheasterdrenchedthewheelanight-long. Thenhehadretreatedwithittohisroomandslungitaloft.
