           ThevillageoftenementsextendedonlyasfarwestasTenthAvenue.EleventhAvenuewasmostlywarehousesandloftsrentedbyfirmswhoshippedbyNewYorkCentralRailroadandwantedaccesstothefreightyardsthathoneycombedtheareafromEleventhAvenuetotheHudsonRiver.Fanucci’sapartmenthousewasoneofthefewleftstandinginthiswildernessandwasoccupiedmostlybybachelortrainmen,yardworkers,andthecheapestprostitutes.ThesepeopledidnotsitinthestreetandgossiplikehonestItalians,theysatinbeertavernsguzzlingtheirpay.SoVitoCorleonefounditaneasymattertoslipacrossthedesertedEleventhAvenueandintothevestibuleofFanucci’sapartmenthouse.TherehedrewthegunhehadneverfiredandwaitedforFanucci.

           Hewatchedthroughtheglassdoorofthevestibule,knowingFanucciwouldcomedownfromTenthAvenue.
