           Hehadwalkeduponedayafterdinner,asheveryoftendid,tospendhiseveningatHartfield.EmmaandHarrietweregoingtowalk;hejoinedthem;and,onreturning,theyfellinwithalargerparty,who,likethemselves,judgeditwisesttotaketheirexerciseearly,astheweatherthreatenedrain;Mr.andMrs.Westonandtheirson,MissBatesandherniece,whohadaccidentallymet.Theyallunited;and,onreachingHartfieldgates,Emma,whoknewitwasexactlythesortofvisitingthatwouldbewelcometoherfather,pressedthemalltogoinanddrinkteawithhim.
