ItwasluckytheScarecrowandtheWoodmanwerewideawakeandheardthewolvescoming.
"Thisismyfight,"saidtheWoodman,"sogetbehindmeandIwillmeetthemastheycome."
Heseizedhisaxe,whichhehadmadeverysharp,andastheleaderofthewolvescameontheTinWoodmanswunghisarmandchoppedthewolf’sheadfromitsbody,sothatitimmediatelydied. Assoonashecouldraisehisaxeanotherwolfcameup,andhealsofellunderthesharpedgeoftheTinWoodman’sweapon. Therewerefortywolves,andfortytimesawolfwaskilled,sothatatlasttheyalllaydeadinaheapbeforetheWoodman.
ThenheputdownhisaxeandsatbesidetheScarecrow,whosaid, "Itwasagoodfight,friend."
TheywaiteduntilDorothyawokethenextmorning. Thelittlegirlwasquitefrightenedwhenshesawthegreatpileofshaggywolves,buttheTinWoodmantoldherall. Shethankedhimforsavingthemandsatdowntobreakfast,afterwhichtheystartedagainupontheirjourney.
NowthissamemorningtheWickedWitchcametothedoorofhercastleandlookedoutwithheroneeyethatcouldseefaroff. Shesawallherwolveslyingdead,andthestrangersstilltravelingthroughhercountry. Thismadeherangrierthanbefore,andsheblewhersilverwhistletwice.
Straightwayagreatflockofwildcrowscameflyingtowardher,enoughtodarkenthesky.
AndtheWickedWitchsaidtotheKingCrow, "Flyatoncetothestrangers;peckouttheireyesandtearthemtopieces."
