Heopenedthebigbox,andDorothysawthatitwasfilledwithspectaclesofeverysizeandshape. Allofthemhadgreenglassesinthem. TheGuardianoftheGatesfoundapairthatwouldjustfitDorothyandputthemoverhereyes. Thereweretwogoldenbandsfastenedtothemthatpassedaroundthebackofherhead,wheretheywerelockedtogetherbyalittlekeythatwasattheendofachaintheGuardianoftheGatesworearoundhisneck. Whentheywereon,Dorothycouldnottakethemoffhadshewished,butofcourseshedidnotwishtobeblindedbytheglareoftheEmeraldCity,soshesaidnothing.
ThenthegreenmanfittedspectaclesfortheScarecrowandtheTinWoodmanandtheLion,andevenonlittleToto; andallwerelockedfastwiththekey.
ThentheGuardianoftheGatesputonhisownglassesandtoldthemhewasreadytoshowthemtothePalace. Takingabiggoldenkeyfromapegonthewall,heopenedanothergate,andtheyallfollowedhimthroughtheportalintothestreetsoftheEmeraldCity.
