SotheWoodmanwentatoncetothetreesandbegantowork; andhesoonmadeatruckoutofthelimbsoftrees,fromwhichhechoppedawayalltheleavesandbranches. Hefastenedittogetherwithwoodenpegsandmadethefourwheelsoutofshortpiecesofabigtreetrunk. Sofastandsowelldidheworkthatbythetimethemicebegantoarrivethetruckwasallreadyforthem.
Theycamefromalldirections,andtherewerethousandsofthem:bigmiceandlittlemiceandmiddle-sizedmice; andeachonebroughtapieceofstringinhismouth. ItwasaboutthistimethatDorothywokefromherlongsleepandopenedhereyes. Shewasgreatlyastonishedtofindherselflyinguponthegrass,withthousandsofmicestandingaroundandlookingathertimidly. ButtheScarecrowtoldherabouteverything,andturningtothedignifiedlittleMouse,hesaid:
"PermitmetointroducetoyouherMajesty,theQueen."
DorothynoddedgravelyandtheQueenmadeacurtsy,afterwhichshebecamequitefriendlywiththelittlegirl.
TheScarecrowandtheWoodmannowbegantofastenthemicetothetruck,usingthestringstheyhadbrought. Oneendofastringwastiedaroundtheneckofeachmouseandtheotherendtothetruck. Ofcoursethetruckwasathousandtimesbiggerthananyofthemicewhoweretodrawit; butwhenallthemicehadbeenharnessed,theywereabletopullitquiteeasily. EventheScarecrowandtheTinWoodmancouldsitonit,andweredrawnswiftlybytheirqueerlittlehorsestotheplacewheretheLionlayasleep.
