Thiswastobeaneventfuldayforthetravelers. Theyhadhardlybeenwalkinganhourwhentheysawbeforethemagreatditchthatcrossedtheroadanddividedtheforestasfarastheycouldseeoneitherside. Itwasaverywideditch,andwhentheycreptuptotheedgeandlookedintoittheycouldseeitwasalsoverydeep,andthereweremanybig,jaggedrocksatthebottom. Thesidesweresosteepthatnoneofthemcouldclimbdown,andforamomentitseemedthattheirjourneymustend.
"Whatshallwedo?"askedDorothydespairingly.
"Ihaven’tthefaintestidea,"saidtheTinWoodman,andtheLionshookhisshaggymaneandlookedthoughtful.
ButtheScarecrowsaid, "Wecannotfly,thatiscertain. Neithercanweclimbdownintothisgreatditch. Therefore,ifwecannotjumpoverit,wemuststopwhereweare."
"IthinkIcouldjumpoverit,"saidtheCowardlyLion,aftermeasuringthedistancecarefullyinhismind.
"Thenweareallright,"answeredtheScarecrow,"foryoucancarryusalloveronyourback,oneatatime."
"Well,I’lltryit,"saidtheLion."Whowillgofirst?"
"Iwill,"declaredtheScarecrow,"for,ifyoufoundthatyoucouldnotjumpoverthegulf,Dorothywouldbekilled,ortheTinWoodmanbadlydentedontherocksbelow.
