ThismadetheTinWoodmanveryunhappy,forhewasalwayscarefulnottohurtanylivingcreature;andashewalkedalongheweptseveraltearsofsorrowandregret. Thesetearsranslowlydownhisfaceandoverthehingesofhisjaw,andtheretheyrusted. WhenDorothypresentlyaskedhimaquestiontheTinWoodmancouldnotopenhismouth,forhisjawsweretightlyrustedtogether. HebecamegreatlyfrightenedatthisandmademanymotionstoDorothytorelievehim,butshecouldnotunderstand. TheLionwasalsopuzzledtoknowwhatwaswrong. ButtheScarecrowseizedtheoil-canfromDorothy’sbasketandoiledtheWoodman’sjaws,sothatafterafewmomentshecouldtalkaswellasbefore.
"Thiswillservemealesson,"saidhe,"tolookwhereIstep. ForifIshouldkillanotherbugorbeetleIshouldsurelycryagain,andcryingrustsmyjawssothatIcannotspeak."
Thereafterhewalkedverycarefully,withhiseyesontheroad,andwhenhesawatinyanttoilingbyhewouldstepoverit,soasnottoharmit. TheTinWoodmanknewverywellhehadnoheart,andthereforehetookgreatcarenevertobecruelorunkindtoanything.
"Youpeoplewithhearts,"hesaid,"havesomethingtoguideyou,andneedneverdowrong; butIhavenoheart,andsoImustbeverycareful.
