"Thatisbecauseyouhavenobrains"answeredthegirl. "Nomatterhowdrearyandgrayourhomesare,wepeopleoffleshandbloodwouldratherlivetherethaninanyothercountry,beiteversobeautiful. Thereisnoplacelikehome."
TheScarecrowsighed.
"OfcourseIcannotunderstandit,"hesaid. "Ifyourheadswerestuffedwithstraw,likemine,youwouldprobablyallliveinthebeautifulplaces,andthenKansaswouldhavenopeopleatall. ItisfortunateforKansasthatyouhavebrains."
"Won’tyoutellmeastory,whileweareresting?"askedthechild.
TheScarecrowlookedatherreproachfully,andanswered:
"MylifehasbeensoshortthatIreallyknownothingwhatever. Iwasonlymadedaybeforeyesterday. Whathappenedintheworldbeforethattimeisallunknowntome. Luckily,whenthefarmermademyhead,oneofthefirstthingshedidwastopaintmyears,sothatIheardwhatwasgoingon. TherewasanotherMunchkinwithhim,andthefirstthingIheardwasthefarmersaying, `Howdoyoulikethoseears?’
