Beforethemwasagreatstretchofcountryhavingafloorassmoothandshiningandwhiteasthebottomofabigplatter. Scatteredaroundweremanyhousesmadeentirelyofchinaandpaintedinthebrightestcolors. Thesehouseswerequitesmall,thebiggestofthemreachingonlyashighasDorothy’swaist. Therewerealsoprettylittlebarns,withchinafencesaroundthem; andmanycowsandsheepandhorsesandpigsandchickens,allmadeofchina,werestandingaboutingroups.
Butthestrangestofallwerethepeoplewholivedinthisqueercountry. Thereweremilkmaidsandshepherdesses,withbrightlycoloredbodicesandgoldenspotsallovertheirgowns; andprincesseswithmostgorgeousfrocksofsilverandgoldandpurple; andshepherdsdressedinkneebreecheswithpinkandyellowandbluestripesdownthem,andgoldenbucklesontheirshoes; andprinceswithjeweledcrownsupontheirheads,wearingerminerobesandsatindoublets; andfunnyclownsinruffledgowns,withroundredspotsupontheircheeksandtall,pointedcaps. And,strangestofall,thesepeoplewereallmadeofchina,eventotheirclothes,andweresosmallthatthetallestofthemwasnohigherthanDorothy’sknee.
Noonedidsomuchaslookatthetravelersatfirst,exceptonelittlepurplechinadogwithanextra-largehead,whichcametothewallandbarkedattheminatinyvoice,afterwardsrunningawayagain.
"Howshallwegetdown?"askedDorothy.
Theyfoundtheladdersoheavytheycouldnotpullitup, sotheScarecrowfelloffthewallandtheothersjumpeddownuponhimsothatthehardfloorwouldnothurttheirfeet. Ofcoursetheytookpainsnottolightonhisheadandgetthepinsintheirfeet.
