Themannerofthescoutwasseriouslyimpressive,thoughnolongerdistinguishedbyanysignsofunmanlyapprehension.Itwasevidentthathismomentaryweaknesshadvanishedwiththeexplanationofamysterywhichhisownexperiencehadnotservedtofathom;andthoughhenowfeltalltherealitiesoftheiractualcondition,thathewaspreparedtomeetthemwiththeenergyofhishardynature.Thisfeelingseemedalsocommontothenatives,whoplacedthemselvesinpositionswhichcommandedafullviewofbothshores,whiletheirownpersonswereeffectuallyconcealedfromobservation.Insuchcircumstances,commonprudencedictatedthatHeywardandhiscompanionsshouldimitateacautionthatproceededfromsointelligentasource.
