Thesuddenandalmostmagicalchange,fromthestirringincidentsofthecombattothestillnessthatnowreignedaroundhim,actedontheheatedimaginationofHeywardlikesomeexcitingdream.Whilealltheimagesandeventshehadwitnessedremaineddeeplyimpressedonhismemory,hefeltadifficultyinpersuadinghimselfoftheirtruth.Stillignorantofthefateofthosewhohadtrustedtotheaidoftheswiftcurrent,heatfirstlistenedintentlytoanysignal,orsoundsofalarm,whichmightannouncethegoodorevilfortuneoftheirhazardousundertaking.Hisattentionwas,however,bestowedinvain;for,withthedisappearanceofUncas,everysignoftheadventurershadbeenlost,leavinghimintotaluncertaintyoftheirfate.
Inamomentofsuchpainfuldoubt,Duncandidnothesitatetolookabouthim,withoutconsultingthatprotectionfromtherockswhichjustbeforehadbeensonecessarytohissafety.Everyeffort,however,todetecttheleastevidenceoftheapproachoftheirhiddenenemies,wasasfruitlessastheinquiryafterhislatecompanions.Thewoodedbanksoftheriversseemedagaindesertedbyeverythingpossessinganimallife.Theuproarwhichhadsolatelyechoedthroughthevaultsoftheforestwasgone,leavingtherushofthewaterstoswellandsinkonthecurrentsoftheair,intheunmingledsweetnessofnature.
