Satisfiedwiththistestimonyintheirfavor,thegirlsproceededtodepositthebodyinashell,ingeniously,andnotinelegantly,fabricatedofthebarkofthebirch;afterwhichtheylowereditintoitsdarkandfinalabode.Theceremonyofcoveringtheremains,andconcealingthemarksofthefreshearth,byleavesandothernaturalandcustomaryobjects,wasconductedwiththesamesimpleandsilentforms.Butwhenthelaborsofthekindbeingswhohadperformedthesesadandfriendlyofficesweresofarcompleted,theyhesitated,inawaytoshowthattheyknewnothowmuchfurthertheymightproceed.Itwasinthisstageoftheritesthatthescoutagainaddressedthem:—
