Everywherealongitsbankswerethemoulderingrelicsofdeadtrees,inallthestagesofdecay,fromthosethatgroanedontheirtotteringtrunkstosuchashadrecentlybeenrobbedofthoseruggedcoatsthatsomysteriouslycontaintheirprincipleoflife.Afewlong,low,andmoss-coveredpileswerescatteredamongthem,likethememorialsofaformerandlong-departedgeneration.
Alltheseminuteparticularswerenotedbythescout,withagravityandinterestthattheyprobablyhadneverbeforeattracted.HeknewthattheHuronencampmentlayashorthalfmileupthebrook;and,withthecharacteristicanxietyofonewhodreadedahiddendanger,hewasgreatlytroubledatnotfindingthesmallesttraceofthepresenceofhisenemy.Onceortwicehefeltinducedtogivetheorderforarush,andtoattemptthevillagebysurprise;buthisexperiencequicklyadmonishedhimofthedangerofsouselessanexperiment.Thenhelistenedintently,andwithpainfuluncertainty,forthesoundsofhostilityinthequarterwhereUncaswasleft;butnothingwasaudibleexceptthesighingofthewind,thatbegantosweepoverthebosomoftheforestingustswhichthreatenedatempest.Atlength,yieldingrathertohisunusualimpatiencethantakingcounselfromhisknowledge,hedeterminedtobringmatterstoanissue,byunmaskinghisforce,andproceedingcautiously,butsteadily,upthestream.
