Thehunter,whohadalreadyabandonedhisintentionofmaimingtherunner,musedamoment,andthenmadeagesture,whichinstantlybroughthistworedcompanionstohisside.TheyspoketogetherearnestlyintheDelawarelanguage,thoughinanundertone;andbythegesturesofthewhiteman,whichwerefrequentlydirectedtowardsthetopofthesapling,itwasevidenthepointedoutthesituationoftheirhiddenenemy.Hiscompanionswerenotlongincomprehendinghiswishes,andlayingasidetheirfire-arms,theyparted,takingoppositesidesofthepath,andburyingthemselvesinthethicket,withsuchcautiousmovements,thattheirstepswereinaudible.
"Now,goyouback,"saidthehunter,speakingagaintoHeyward,"andholdtheimpintalk;theseMohicansherewilltakehimwithoutbreakinghispaint."
"Nay,"saidHeyward,proudly,"Iwillseizehimmyself."
"Hist!whatcouldyoudo,mounted,againstanIndianinthebushes?"
"Iwilldismount."
