Theorator,orthepolitician,whocanproducesuchastateofthings,iscommonlypopularwithhiscontemporaries,howeverhemaybetreatedbyposterity.Allperceivedthatmorewasmeantthanwasuttered,andeachonebelievedthatthehiddenmeaningwaspreciselysuchashisownfacultiesenabledhimtounderstand,orhisownwishesledhimtoanticipate.
Inthishappystateofthings,itisnotsurprisingthatthemanagementofMaguaprevailed.Thetribeconsentedtoactwithdeliberation,andwithonevoicetheycommittedthedirectionofthewholeaffairtothegovernmentofthechiefwhohadsuggestedsuchwiseandintelligibleexpedients.
Maguahadnowattainedonegreatobjectofallhiscunningandenterprise.Thegroundhehadlostinthefavorofhispeoplewascompletelyregained,andhefoundhimselfevenplacedattheheadofaffairs.Hewas,intruth,theirruler;and,solongashecouldmaintainhispopularity,nomonarchcouldbemoredespotic,especiallywhilethetribecontinuedinahostilecountry.
