Itismorethanprobablethat,inthedisorderedstateofhisthoughts,hewouldsoonhavefallenintosomesuspicious,ifnotfatalerror,hadnothisincipientattemptsbeeninterruptedbyafiercegrowlfromthequadruped.Threeseveraltimesdidherenewhiseffortstoproceed,andasoftenwashemetbythesameunaccountableopposition,eachinterruptionseemingmoresavageandthreateningthanthepreceding.
