           TherewasnotermofabuseknowntotheHuronvocabularythatthedisappointedwomendidnotlavishlyexpendonthesuccessfulstranger.Theyfloutedathisefforts,andtoldhim,withbitterscoffs,thathisfeetwerebetterthanhishands;andthathemeritedwings,whileheknewnottheuseofanarroworaknife.Toallthisthecaptivemadenoreply;butwascontenttopreserveanattitudeinwhichdignitywassingularlyblendedwithdisdain.Exasperatedasmuchbyhiscomposureasbyhisgood-fortune,theirwordsbecameunintelligible,andweresucceededbyshrill,piercingyells.Justthenthecraftysquaw,whohadtakenthenecessaryprecautiontofirethepiles,madeherwaythroughthethrong,andclearedaplaceforherselfinfrontofthecaptive.
