TheIndiansdepartedtheirseveralwayswithoutreply,whileHawkeyecautiouslyproceededwiththetwogentlemen.Heywardsoonpressedtothesideoftheirguide,eagertocatchanearlyglimpseofthoseenemieshehadpursuedwithsomuchtoilandanxiety.Hiscompaniontoldhimtostealtotheedgeofthewood,which,asusual,wasfringedwithathicket,andwaithiscoming,forhewishedtoexaminecertainsuspicioussignsalittleononeside.Duncanobeyed,andsoonfoundhimselfinasituationtocommandaviewwhichhefoundasextraordinaryasitwasnovel.
Thetreesofmanyacreshadbeenfelled,andtheglowofamildsummer’seveninghadfallenontheclearing,inbeautifulcontrasttothegraylightoftheforest.AshortdistancefromtheplacewhereDuncanstood,thestreamhadseeminglyexpandedintoalittlelake,coveringmostofthelowland,frommountaintomountain.Thewaterfelloutofthiswidebasin,inacataractsoregularandgentle,thatitappearedrathertobetheworkofhumanhands,thanfashionedbynature.Ahundredearthendwellingsstoodonthemarginofthelake,andeveninitswater,asthoughthelatterhadoverfloweditsusualbanks.
