Wheneverhealludedtoanypresent(andthesubtleIndianneglectednone),thedarkcountenanceoftheflatteredindividualgleamedwithexultation,nordidheevenhesitatetoassertthetruthofthewords,bygesturesofapplauseandconfirmation.Thenthevoiceofthespeakerfell,andlosttheloud,animatedtonesoftriumphwithwhichhehadenumeratedtheirdeedsofsuccessandvictory.HedescribedthecataractofGlenn’s;theimpregnablepositionofitsrockyisland,withitscaverns,anditsnumerousrapidsandwhirlpools;henamedthenameofLaLongueCarabine,andpauseduntiltheforestbeneaththemhadsentupthelastechoofaloudandlongyell,withwhichthehatedappellationwasreceived.Hepointedtowardstheyouthfulmilitarycaptive,anddescribedthedeathofafavoritewarrior,whohadbeenprecipitatedintothedeepravinebyhishand.Henotonlymentionedthefateofhimwho,hangingbetweenheavenandearth,hadpresentedsuchaspectacleofhorrortothewholeband,butheactedanewtheterrorsofhissituation,hisresolutionandhisdeath,onthebranchesofasapling;and,finally,herapidlyrecountedthemannerinwhicheachoftheirfriendshadfallen,neverfailingtotouchupontheircourage,andtheirmostacknowledgedvirtues.Whenthisrecitalofeventswasended,hisvoiceoncemorechanged,andbecameplaintive,andevenmusical,initslowgutturalsounds.Henowspokeofthewivesandchildrenoftheslain;theirdestitution;theirmisery,bothphysicalandmoral;theirdistance;and,atlast,oftheirunavengedwrongs.
