Atarespectfuldistancefromthisunusualshowweregathereddiversgroupsofcuriousidlers;someadmiringthebloodandboneofthehigh-mettledmilitarycharger,andothersgazingatthepreparations,withdullwonderofvulgarcuriosity.Therewasoneman,however,who,byhiscountenanceandactions,formedamarkedexceptiontothosewhocomposedthelatterclassofspectators,beingneitheridle,norseeminglyveryignorant.
Thepersonofthisindividualwastothelastdegreeungainly,withoutbeinginanyparticularmannerdeformed.Hehadallthebonesandjointsofothermen,withoutanyoftheirproportions.Erect,hisstaturesurpassedthatofhisfellows;seated,heappearedreducedwithintheordinarylimitsoftherace.Thesamecontrarietyinhismembersseemedtoexistthroughoutthewholeman.Hisheadwaslarge;hisshouldersnarrow;hisarmslonganddangling;whilehishandsweresmall,ifnotdelicate.Hislegsandthighswerethin,nearlytoemaciation,butofextraordinarylength;andhiskneeswouldhavebeenconsideredtremendous,hadtheynotbeenoutdonebythebroaderfoundationsonwhichthisfalsesuperstructureoftheblendedhumanorderswassoprofanelyreared.Theill-assortedandinjudiciousattireoftheindividualonlyservedtorenderhisawkwardnessmoreconspicuous.Asky-bluecoat,withshortandbroadskirtsandlowcape,exposedalongthinneck,andlongerandthinnerlegs,totheworstanimadversionsoftheevildisposed.
