Ibelievethesillyfellowsmusthavethoughttheywouldbreaktheirshinsovertreasureassoonastheywerelanded,fortheyallcameoutoftheirsulksinamomentandgaveacheerthatstartedtheechoinafar-awayhillandsentthebirdsoncemoreflyingandsquallingroundtheanchorage.
Thecaptainwastoobrighttobeintheway.Hewhippedoutofsightinamoment,leavingSilvertoarrangetheparty,andIfancyitwasaswellhedidso.Hadhebeenondeck,hecouldnolongersomuchashavepretendednottounderstandthesituation.Itwasasplainasday.Silverwasthecaptain,andamightyrebelliouscrewhehadofit.Thehonesthands—andIwassoontoseeitprovedthatthereweresuchonboard—musthavebeenverystupidfellows.Orrather,Isupposethetruthwasthis,thatallhandsweredisaffectedbytheexampleoftheringleaders—onlysomemore,someless;andafew,beinggoodfellowsinthemain,couldneitherbelednordrivenanyfurther.Itisonethingtobeidleandskulkandquiteanothertotakeashipandmurderanumberofinnocentmen.
Atlast,however,thepartywasmadeup.Sixfellowsweretostayonboard,andtheremainingthirteen,includingSilver,begantoembark.
Thenitwasthattherecameintomyheadthefirstofthemadnotionsthatcontributedsomuchtosaveourlives.IfsixmenwereleftbySilver,itwasplainourpartycouldnottakeandfighttheship;andsinceonlysixwereleft,itwasequallyplainthatthecabinpartyhadnopresentneedofmyassistance.
