           Wehadadrearymorning’sworkbeforeus,fortherewasnosignofanywind,andtheboatshadtobegotoutandmanned,andtheshipwarpedthreeorfourmilesroundthecorneroftheislandandupthenarrowpassagetothehavenbehindSkeletonIsland.Ivolunteeredforoneoftheboats,whereIhad,ofcourse,nobusiness.Theheatwassweltering,andthemengrumbledfiercelyovertheirwork.Andersonwasincommandofmyboat,andinsteadofkeepingthecrewinorder,hegrumbledasloudastheworst.

           "Well,"hesaidwithanoath,"it’snotforever."

           Ithoughtthiswasaverybadsign,foruptothatdaythemenhadgonebrisklyandwillinglyabouttheirbusiness;buttheverysightoftheislandhadrelaxedthecordsofdiscipline.

           Allthewayin,LongJohnstoodbythesteersmanandconnedtheship.Heknewthepassagelikethepalmofhishand,andthoughthemaninthechainsgoteverywheremorewaterthanwasdowninthechart,Johnneverhesitatedonce.

           "There’sastrongscourwiththeebb,"hesaid,"andthisherepassagehasbeendugout,inamannerofspeaking,withaspade."

           Webroughtupjustwheretheanchorwasinthechart,aboutathirdofamilefromeachshore,themainlandononesideandSkeletonIslandontheother.Thebottomwascleansand.Theplungeofouranchorsentupcloudsofbirdswheelingandcryingoverthewoods,butinlessthanaminutetheyweredownagainandallwasoncemoresilent.
