Theboatswain,JobAnderson,wasthelikeliestmanaboard,andthoughhekepthisoldtitle,heservedinawayasmate.Mr.Trelawneyhadfollowedthesea,andhisknowledgemadehimveryuseful,forheoftentookawatchhimselfineasyweather.Andthecoxswain,IsraelHands,wasacareful,wily,old,experiencedseamanwhocouldbetrustedatapinchwithalmostanything.
HewasagreatconfidantofLongJohnSilver,andsothementionofhisnameleadsmeontospeakofourship’scook,Barbecue,asthemencalledhim.
Aboardshiphecarriedhiscrutchbyalanyardroundhisneck,tohavebothhandsasfreeaspossible.Itwassomethingtoseehimwedgethefootofthecrutchagainstabulkhead,andproppedagainstit,yieldingtoeverymovementoftheship,getonwithhiscookinglikesomeonesafeashore.Stillmorestrangewasittoseehimintheheaviestofweathercrossthedeck.Hehadalineortworiggeduptohelphimacrossthewidestspaces—LongJohn’searrings,theywerecalled;andhewouldhandhimselffromoneplacetoanother,nowusingthecrutch,nowtrailingitalongsidebythelanyard,asquicklyasanothermancouldwalk.Yetsomeofthemenwhohadsailedwithhimbeforeexpressedtheirpitytoseehimsoreduced.
