           ButthoughIwassoterrifiedbytheideaoftheseafaringmanwithoneleg,Iwasfarlessafraidofthecaptainhimselfthananybodyelsewhoknewhim. Therewerenightswhenhetookadealmorerumandwaterthanhisheadwouldcarry; andthenhewouldsometimessitandsinghiswicked,old,wildsea-songs,mindingnobody; butsometimeshewouldcallforglassesroundandforceallthetremblingcompanytolistentohisstoriesorbearachorustohissinging. OftenIhaveheardthehouseshakingwith"Yo-ho-ho,andabottleofrum,"alltheneighboursjoininginfordearlife,withthefearofdeathuponthem,andeachsinginglouderthantheothertoavoidremark. Forinthesefitshewasthemostoverridingcompanioneverknown; hewouldslaphishandonthetableforsilenceallround; hewouldflyupinapassionofangerataquestion,orsometimesbecausenonewasput,andsohejudgedthecompanywasnotfollowinghisstory. Norwouldheallowanyonetoleavetheinntillhehaddrunkhimselfsleepyandreeledofftobed. 

           Hisstorieswerewhatfrightenedpeopleworstofall. Dreadfulstoriestheywereabouthanging,andwalkingtheplank,andstormsatsea,andtheDryTortugas,andwilddeedsandplacesontheSpanishMain. ByhisownaccounthemusthavelivedhislifeamongsomeofthewickedestmenthatGodeveralloweduponthesea, andthelanguageinwhichhetoldthesestoriesshockedourplaincountrypeoplealmostasmuchasthecrimesthathedescribed. Myfatherwasalwayssayingtheinnwouldberuined,forpeoplewouldsoonceasecomingtheretobetyrannizedoverandputdown,andsentshiveringtotheirbeds; butIreallybelievehispresencedidusgood.
