ThiswasallthatIrequiredtoknow.Israelcouldmoveabout,hewasnowarmed,andifhehadbeenatsomuchtroubletogetridofme,itwasplainthatIwasmeanttobethevictim.Whathewoulddoafterwards—whetherhewouldtrytocrawlrightacrosstheislandfromNorthInlettothecampamongtheswampsorwhetherhewouldfireLongTom,trustingthathisowncomradesmightcomefirsttohelphim—was,ofcourse,morethanIcouldsay.
