           Ifwehadbeenallowedtositidle,weshouldallhavefallenintheblues,butCaptainSmollettwasneverthemanforthat.Allhandswerecalledupbeforehim,andhedividedusintowatches.ThedoctorandGrayandIforone;thesquire,Hunter,andJoyceupontheother.Tiredthoughweallwere,twoweresentoutforfirewood;twomoreweresettodigagraveforRedruth;thedoctorwasnamedcook;Iwasputsentryatthedoor;andthecaptainhimselfwentfromonetoanother,keepingupourspiritsandlendingahandwhereveritwaswanted.
