Wewereallsilentforalittlewhile.SuddenlyMissTrelawnysaid:
"ButSilviowasnotinherelastnight!"
"Areyousure?Couldyouprovethatifnecessary?"Shehesitatedbeforereplying:
"Iamcertainofit;butIfearitwouldbedifficulttoprove.Silviosleepsinabasketinmyroom.Icertainlyputhimtobedlastnight;Irememberdistinctlylayinghislittleblanketoverhim,andtuckinghimin.ThismorningItookhimoutofthebasketmyself.Icertainlynevernoticedhiminhere;though,ofcourse,thatwouldnotmeanmuch,forIwastooconcernedaboutpoorfather,andtoomuchoccupiedwithhim,tonoticeevenSilvio."
TheDoctorshookhisheadashesaidwithacertainsadness:
"Well,atanyrateitisnousetryingtoproveanythingnow.Anycatintheworldwouldhavecleanedblood-marks—didanyexist—fromhispawsinahundredthpartofthetimethathaselapsed."
Againwewereallsilent;andagainthesilencewasbrokenbyMissTrelawny:
"ButnowthatIthinkofit,itcouldnothavebeenpoorSilviothatinjuredFather.MydoorwasshutwhenIfirstheardthesound;andFather’swasshutwhenIlistenedatit.
