InmyroomthateveningIwasmakingsomenotesofwhathadhappened,whentherecamealowtaponthedoor.InobediencetomysummonsSergeantDawcamein,carefullyclosingthedoorbehindhim.
"Well,Sergeant,"saidI,"sitdown.Whatisit?"
"Iwantedtospeaktoyou,sir,aboutthoselamps."Inoddedandwaited:hewenton:"YouknowthatthatroomwheretheywerefoundopensdirectlyintotheroomwhereMissTrelawnysleptlastnight?"
"Yes."
"Duringthenightawindowsomewhereinthatpartofthehousewasopened,andshutagain.Iheardit,andtookalookround;butIcouldseenosignofanything."
"Yes,Iknowthat!"Isaid;"Iheardawindowmovedmyself."
"Doesnothingstrikeyouasstrangeaboutit,sir?"
"Strange!"Isaid;"Strange!whyit’sallthemostbewildering,maddeningthingIhaveeverencountered.Itisallsostrangethatoneseemstowonder,andsimplywaitsforwhatwillhappennext.Butwhatdoyoumeanbystrange?"
TheDetectivepaused,asifchoosinghiswordstobegin;andthensaiddeliberately:
"Yousee,Iamnotonewhobelievesinmagicandsuchthings.Iamforfactsallthetime;andIalwaysfindinthelong-runthatthereisareasonandacauseforeverything.
